About Exuma and White Cay
Exuma in the Bahamas consists of over 365 islands, also known as cays. Little Exuma, connected to the larger Great Exuma by a bridge, is the second largest island. As of 2010, the entire island chain, stretching 130 miles long and covering 72 square miles, had a population of 6,928.
White or Sandy Cay is not only famous for its mile-long white sandbar but also hosts a unique lizard species. The Cyclura rileyi cristata, or White Cay iguana, is exclusive to this cay, with an estimated population of 150 to 200 individuals in 1997.
How to get to White Cay?
Reaching this small sandy island requires a boat journey. Charter boats can take you to White Cay, but it’s wise to confirm in advance. Alternatively, adventurous visitors might rent a kayak and paddle there themselves. Sadly, no organized tours lead to White Cay, so preparation is key. Remember Jack Sparrow’s advice for the best experience at White Cay: “Mind the tide.”
