More about Groombridge Place

Groombridge Place is a moated manor house rich in history. The earliest records mention its existence from 1239. Over the centuries, it has witnessed the detainment of the Duke of Orléans after the Battle of Agincourt and the architectural influence of Philip Packer and Christopher Wren in 1662. The house remained largely untouched but saw some modern restorations in the 20th century. The property’s gardens have been admired for ages, with one being a favorite of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who set his Sherlock Holmes novel “The Valley of Fear” at Groombridge, renaming it “Birlstone Manor”. Today, while the house remains private, its gardens are open to the public.

Elizabeth’s Escape and Realization
Distressed after a heated discussion about marrying Mr. Collins, Elizabeth runs away to the serene lake near her home. As she reaches the lake, she witnesses a majestic scene of water birds taking flight. Not long after, her parents follow her to the lake. Her mother passionately insists on the marriage to Mr. Collins, emphasizing the societal expectations and pressures. Elizabeth firmly refuses, expressing her wish to marry for love rather than convenience. In a touching turn of events, her father steps in, siding with Elizabeth. He assures her that they won’t force her into a marriage she doesn’t want.

Mr. Bingley’s Struggle with Confession
The calm lake serves as the backdrop once again, but this time for Mr. Bingley’s internal turmoil. Mr. Darcy stands still, a silent pillar of support, while Mr. Bingley paces nervously back and forth. Mr. Bingley’s erratic movements depict his jumbled thoughts and apprehensions about confessing his feelings to Jane Bennet. He had previously tried to propose to Jane but couldn’t gather the courage. The tranquil surroundings of the pond reflect the contrast between Mr. Darcy’s calm demeanor and Mr. Bingley’s anxious state.
