Groombridge Place is a moated manor house rich in history. The earliest records mention its existence from 1239. Over the centuries, it has witnessed the detainment of the Duke of Orléans after the Battle of Agincourt and the architectural influence of Philip Packer and Christopher Wren in 1662. The house remained largely untouched but saw some modern restorations in the 20th century. The property’s gardens have been admired for ages, with one being a favorite of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who set his Sherlock Holmes novel “The Valley of Fear” at Groombridge, renaming it “Birlstone Manor”. Today, while the house remains private, its gardens are open to the public.
